Matthew Dahl was born on April 28, 1978. He was raised in Portage la Prairie alongside his twin brother, Lindsey. Dahl developed into a top pitcher and infielder who was known as a dangerous left-handed hitter. He played on many provincial championship teams in Portage youth categories, Junior in Carman, and Senior with Elmwood. Dahl represented Manitoba in many Western Canadian and National Championships, playing on Team Manitoba at the 1997 Canada Summer Games. He was often a member of an all-star team within the league he played. While playing in the Manitoba Junior League from 1997-1999, Dahl showed his skills by winning a batting championship alongside his brother. During his junior career, Dahl was crowned the Most Valuable Player in 1997. In Senior ball, Dahl was a part of the powerful Elmwood Giants team that won two Western Canadian Championships and were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.
