Fred Matsubara

Fred Matsubara was born on August 16, 1967. He was known throughout his career as a fierce right-handed pitcher. He emerged as a premier pitcher in Midget where he won a provincial championship with Southdale in 1984. In Matsubara's junior career from 1985-1988, he played in four consecutive Western Canadian Championships, three of which were with St. Boniface, and one with Elmwood. At two of these Western Championships, he was named the Most Valuable Pitcher. From 1987 through 1990, Matsubara played at Mayville State in North Dakota and accumulated a record of 23 wins and 4 losses. He was named to the All-Conference team on two occasions following this success. In 1989, Matsubara was picked up by the Elmwood Giants for the National Championship. In 1990, he was on the Canadian Senior Men's National Team and competed in a World Championship. In his early 20s, he pitched for the St. Boniface Native Sons team that was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. Unfortunately, due to injuries, he left competitive baseball following the 1991 season. He currently resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
