Larry Nicholson
Larry Nicholson was born on September 1st, 1954, and grew up on a farm near Neepawa, Manitoba. Nicholson became proficient as a pitcher in both baseball and fastball in the 1970s. In the early 70s, he primarily played fastball, where he would play in a provincial championship tournament in Thompson. It was in the mid-70s that Nicholson started playing baseball for the Intermediate Neepawa Farmers. He became a star player on the Farmers team that eventually won the provincial Intermediate title in 1981. This team went on to represent Manitoba at the Western Canadian championship in Quesnel, British Columbia where they finished fourth. In 1982, the Farmers joined the Manitoba Senior Baseball League. During this time, Nicholson was a top pitcher and power hitter. Nicholson was a pickup for the Riverside Canucks in 1983, who went to the National championship tournament in Sudbury, Ontario. In 1986, the Farmers took the Manitoba Senior Baseball League pennant and won the prestigious July 1st MSBL tournament in Birtle, Manitoba. During this time, Nicholson was the winning pitcher in each of the Farmers’ three straight victories. When his two boys needed coaches for their teams in 1988, Nicholson retired as a player and spent the next decade as a coach.
