Darrell McElroy
Darrell McElroy was born on December 12, 1960, in Darlingford, Manitoba. Throughout his baseball career, McElroy excelled as a pitcher, catcher, infielder, and was a dangerous power hitter. At age 17, McElroy started playing intermediate AAA ball with the Kaleida K’s of the Border League. He was a member of the Kaleida team that was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011. In 1980, McElroy joined the Morden Bombers and played until 1982, continuing his baseball career with the Morden Mohawks from 1984 to 1996. McElroy was not only a Border League all-star in 17 of the 20 years he played, he was also named MVP of the Border League all-star games of 1977 and 1988. McElroy was a part of seven teams that won the Manitoba Intermediate AAA championship. In 1990, he was a part of the Manitoba Border East team that won the provincial championship, which then went on to win the Western Canadian tournament in Westlock, Alberta. He went on to coach minor ball in Morden for 12 years. Alongside his love of baseball, McElroy was also an accomplished high-level Senior hockey player. In 1994, McElroy was chosen as Male Athlete of the Year by the Manitoba Central Region Sports Association.
